SHIFTING STATES

02/11/2016
into the liminal

Over the past few months I have been working towards this forthcoming exhibition at Espacio Gallery in Bethnal Green, London. Earlier this year I joined with Espacio member Erika Wengenroth to invite a group of artists, both members and guests, to explore the concept of the 'liminal'.

Liminality is a state of transition, of suspension on the threshold between one place, time or state of mind and another. It involves ambiguity, uncertainty and the dissolution of order: identities and outcomes are thrown into doubt. It speaks of borderlands, faultlines and indeterminate places.

I will be showing both figurative oil paintings and abstract screenprints. Both sets of work take the idea of the threshold as their starting point. Working in these very different media has been quite a change of direction for me in terms of technique, and has been full of challenges and rewards.

THRESHOLD I

THRESHOLD I - a one-off, multi-layered screenprint including watercolour screenprint, autographic and photographic stencils layers.

Some very strong work is emerging in the run up to the exhibition. There will be a meditative film set on the Isle of Grain from Deborah Burnstone, subtle, textured prints and artists’ books from Sally Tyrie, striking mixed media sculpture and installations from Janet Curley Cannon and Erika Wengenroth and haunting photography from Richard Brayshaw. Plus plenty of expressive, inventive painting and printmaking.

Artists in the exhibition have shown in the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, the John Moores Painting Competition, the Discerning Eye Exhibition and the National Open Art competition.

You can get an early peek at some of their work on the Espacio Gallery website by scrolling down the list of forthcoming exhibitions
